New Surfaces for Old Eagle Rock Kitchens
Countertops in Eagle Rock call for a little more thought about style than in most places. The neighborhood is full of homes in Craftsman, Georgian, Streamline Moderne, Art Deco and Mission Revival styles, and it holds 19 Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments. A glossy, ultra-modern slab can look out of place in a 1920s bungalow kitchen. Our job is to help you pick a surface that works for how you cook now and still suits the house.
First, a jurisdiction note
Eagle Rock is not its own city anymore. It incorporated in 1911 and was annexed by Los Angeles in 1923, partly to secure a reliable water supply and a high school. That means any building permits for your remodel come from the City of Los Angeles, not from a separate Eagle Rock city hall and not from neighboring Glendale or Pasadena. The old Eagle Rock City Hall on Colorado Boulevard is now a landmark, not a permit counter. If your project relocates a sink, adds an island with plumbing or changes electrical circuits, plan on City of LA permits for that part of the work.
Matching material to the era of the house
- Craftsman kitchens: honed or matte quartz in warm whites, soapstone-look grays or muted greens. A simple eased or small-bevel edge fits better than a heavy ogee.
- Mission Revival and Spanish-style homes: granite or quartzite with earthy tones pairs well with terracotta tile and plaster walls.
- Art Deco and Streamline Moderne: crisp white or black quartz, sometimes with a waterfall end, echoes the clean lines of the era.
- Georgian and other formal styles: marble or marble-look quartz with a classic edge profile.
We bring samples to the house so you can see them against your own cabinets, flooring and light, which in older homes is often softer than in a product photo.
Older homes, uneven walls
Houses that are close to a century old rarely have perfectly straight walls or level floors. Before we fabricate, we template the actual cabinet run rather than working from a tape measure alone. That lets us scribe the slab to wavy plaster, plan backsplash heights around original windows and trim, and set seams where they will be least visible. If your cabinets are original built-ins, we will check that they can carry stone, and suggest reinforcement where needed.
Quartz, marble or quartzite?
Quartz is the most common choice in Eagle Rock because it gives the look of stone with very little upkeep: no sealing, good stain resistance, consistent color. Marble is beautiful in a period home but etches from lemon juice, wine and vinegar, so it suits people who like a lived-in patina. Quartzite sits in between, with natural veining and more resistance to etching than marble, though it still needs sealing. For bathrooms, a quartz or marble vanity top is often the simplest upgrade for an original bath.

Eagle Rock Questions
Who issues permits for a kitchen remodel in Eagle Rock?
The City of Los Angeles. Eagle Rock has been part of LA since 1923, so permits for plumbing, electrical or structural changes go through the city, not Glendale or Pasadena. A countertop swap that keeps the sink and outlets where they are is usually simpler than a layout change.
What countertop looks right in a Craftsman kitchen?
Matte or honed surfaces in warm, muted colors tend to suit Craftsman homes best. Quartz in a soft white or soapstone-look gray with a simple edge is a common choice that fits the style without needing much maintenance.
Will marble hold up in a busy Eagle Rock kitchen?
Marble scratches and etches more easily than quartz or quartzite. Some owners of older homes like the worn look it develops. If you want a marble feel with less care, consider a marble-look quartz or a quartzite.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
It is normal in older houses. We template the actual cabinets and walls so the stone can be scribed to fit, and we plan seams and backsplash heights around the quirks of the room.
