Heavy Stone in Earthquake Country
Countertops in San Gabriel are heavy, and the ground under them moves now and then. The city's own landmark tells the story: Mission San Gabriel Arcángel lost its three-bell campanario when a series of earthquakes shook Southern California on December 8, 1812, and the mission complex was damaged again in the Whittier Narrows earthquake on October 1, 1987. A stone countertop will not stop a quake, but how it is supported decides whether it stays put during one.
Why installation matters here
A kitchen's worth of quartz or granite can weigh well over a thousand pounds once you add an island. That weight sits on cabinet boxes that are often just screwed together and set on the floor. If the cabinets are not fastened to wall studs, a strong shake can rack them, and the stone moves with them. Before we install, we check:
- that base cabinets are screwed into studs, not just drywall
- that the cabinets are level, so the stone sits evenly instead of on a few high points
- that island overhangs over about 10 inches have steel brackets or corbels underneath
- that the stone is bonded to the cabinets with the right adhesive, not just resting in place
A long-settled city
People stay in San Gabriel. Census estimates show 95.2% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier, and households average 3.00 people. About half of homes, 50.4%, are owner-occupied. Many kitchens here have been in use for decades, and some have been remodeled more than once. Older cabinets may have been installed before anyone worried much about anchoring, so this is one of the first things we look at when we measure.
Choosing a surface
Quartz is our most common install in San Gabriel. It is consistent from slab to slab, does not need sealing and hides daily wear. Granite is a good choice next to a hot range. Quartzite and marble give natural veining for an island or vanity. For bathrooms, we fabricate single and double vanity tops with undermount sinks, and we use the same anchoring checks on vanities, which are smaller but just as able to shift.
Outdoor kitchens in a dry, warm climate
San Gabriel has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with very dry summers, mild winters and about 15.67 inches of rain a year. That makes a backyard kitchen useful for much of the year. Outdoor counters face strong sun and heat, so we recommend granite or other natural stone over indoor quartz, which can discolor in direct sunlight. Built-in grills need proper clearances and the correct cutout size, which we match to the grill's spec sheet.
About engineered stone safety
You may have read about California's rules for cutting engineered stone. The state's Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board approved emergency regulations in December 2023 after silicosis cases among fabrication workers, and they became permanent in February 2025. Those rules govern how shops cut and finish the material, and an installed countertop is not a dust source. As of our latest check homeowners can still choose quartz, but in May 2026 the Board granted a petition seeking a ban on engineered-stone fabrication and asked Cal/OSHA to draft an emergency standard, so availability could change. We are happy to answer questions about how fabrication works.

San Gabriel Background
- Earthquakes at the Mission. The December 8, 1812 earthquakes toppled Mission San Gabriel's three-bell campanario, and the Whittier Narrows earthquake of October 1, 1987 damaged the property again before much of it was restored.
- People stay put. 95.2% of San Gabriel residents lived in the same house a year earlier, households average 3.00 people, and about 50.4% of homes are owner-occupied (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024).
- Dry summers, mild winters. San Gabriel has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate with very dry summers and mild winters, and average annual precipitation of about 15.67 inches.
- Incorporated in 1913. San Gabriel incorporated as a city on April 24, 1913, when it had about 1,500 residents, around the mission founded in 1771. The city had 39,568 residents at the 2020 census.

San Gabriel Questions
How do you keep stone counters from shifting in a San Gabriel earthquake?
By making sure the cabinets underneath are screwed into wall studs, leveling them, bonding the stone to the cabinets and adding steel supports under larger overhangs. Nothing is quake-proof, but a well-supported top is far less likely to move.
Are quartz countertops banned in California?
Not as of our latest check. California adopted emergency rules in December 2023, made permanent in 2025, for how fabrication shops cut engineered stone, because of silicosis risk to workers. In May 2026 the state Standards Board asked Cal/OSHA to draft an emergency standard after a petition seeking a fabrication ban, so ask us for the current status. A finished countertop does not release dust in normal use.
My cabinets are 30 years old. Can they take a granite top?
Many can. We check the boxes for water damage, loose joints and level when we measure. If a cabinet needs reinforcement or anchoring, we will put it in the quote before any stone is ordered.
What counter should I use for a backyard kitchen?
With San Gabriel's dry, sunny summers, granite or a sun-tolerant natural stone is the safer choice. Indoor quartz can yellow or fade in direct sun.
