Stone Surfaces for the City We Are Named After

Countertops in Pasadena are our core work, and the city gives us a wide variety of houses to work in. The 2020 census counted 138,699 residents and 61,643 housing units here, and Census estimates show 87.8% of residents were living in the same house a year earlier. People stay put, which means a new countertop is usually a long-term decision, not a quick flip. We plan each job that way: material picked for how you cook, edges picked for who is in the kitchen, and seams placed where they will not bother you for the next twenty years.

Working inside a Craftsman

Pasadena has a deep stock of early twentieth-century homes. Bungalow Heaven alone holds more than 800 small Craftsman homes built between 1900 and 1930, and much of it became a city landmark district in 1989. Kitchens in houses of that age are often narrow, have walls that are no longer square, and sit on original framing that has settled for a century. Before we cut anything we template the actual walls, not the drawings, so the stone follows the room instead of fighting it.

Many owners want a top that suits the house rather than shouting over it. A honed or leathered granite, a soapstone-look quartz, or a quartzite with soft movement often sits more comfortably next to original fir trim than a high-gloss slab. Simple eased or small-radius edges also read closer to the period than ornate ogee profiles. We bring samples to the house so you can see them under your own light and next to your own woodwork.

What we install across Pasadena

  • Quartz countertops, our most requested surface, for kitchens that see daily use
  • Granite countertops, polished, honed or leathered
  • Kitchen countertop replacement that removes old tile or laminate and sets new stone on existing cabinets when they are sound
  • Bathroom vanity tops with undermount sinks, including small single-sink tops for older baths
  • Quartzite and marble countertops for owners who want natural stone and accept its care routine
  • Outdoor kitchen countertops for patios and backyard grills

Hard water and your sink area

Pasadena Water and Power reports that local groundwater averaged 222 mg/L of total hardness in its 2026 water quality report (202 to 256 mg/L, roughly 12 to 15 grains per gallon), and imported water from the Metropolitan Water District averaged 234 mg/L. The same report says about half of the utility's supply came from local sources, with the rest from the Metropolitan Water District. Water that hard leaves white mineral rings around faucets. On quartz, those rings wipe off with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner. On polished marble, acidic descalers can etch the surface, so we talk through cleaning habits before you choose a calcite-based stone for the sink run.

Heavy stone in earthquake country

The Raymond Fault runs along part of the boundary of greater Pasadena, and the whole region sits in an active seismic zone. A kitchen run of stone is heavy, so we check that base cabinets are level, solid and fastened to the wall framing before the top goes on. Long overhangs at islands get proper support brackets or corbels, and we avoid leaving tall backsplash slabs relying on adhesive alone. None of this makes a counter earthquake-proof, but it keeps the weight where it belongs.

Engineered stone and California's silica rules

Quartz is engineered stone, and cutting it creates fine silica dust. California's Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board adopted emergency amendments to its silica standard, Title 8 Section 5204, on December 14, 2023, effective December 29, 2023, and the amendments became permanent on February 5, 2025. The standard requires effective wet methods for high-exposure work on engineered stone. Wikipedia reports that about 500 California countertop fabrication workers had been diagnosed with silicosis as of January 2026, and in May 2026 the Standards Board granted a petition seeking a ban on fabricating engineered stone and asked Cal/OSHA to draft an emergency standard. We share this as information, not as a legal opinion: ask anyone you hire how they control dust during fabrication and any on-site cutting, and expect a clear answer. We keep cutting off your property whenever possible.

Pasadena Questions

Do I need historic approval to replace kitchen countertops in a Pasadena landmark district?

Swapping a countertop is interior work, but we do not want you to guess. If your home is in a landmark district, and especially if the project also touches the exterior, such as a new window over the sink, check with the City of Pasadena's planning and historic preservation staff before we schedule. We are happy to give you a written scope to bring to them.

Which countertop handles Pasadena's hard water best?

Quartz is the easiest to live with because it is non-porous and mineral spots wipe away. Granite does well once sealed. Polished marble is the most sensitive, since the acidic cleaners people use on hard-water scale can dull it.

Can new stone go on the original cabinets in an older bungalow?

Often, yes, if the boxes are solid and can be leveled. We check for racking, soft spots and water damage under the sink during the measure. If a cabinet cannot safely carry stone, we tell you before you buy material.

How long does a Pasadena countertop job take?

Typically a template visit, then fabrication, then a one-day install for most kitchens. Your sink and cooktop are usually out of service for a short window around install day, and we give you the schedule in writing.
