Setting Heavy Stone the Right Way

Countertops in Sierra Madre come with a local reminder about installation. On June 28, 1991, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake centered about 7.5 miles northeast of town damaged hundreds of homes in the area and blocked roads to Mount Wilson with landslides. The city sits right at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, where these thrust faults meet the valley. A kitchen full of stone is a lot of weight, so how it is supported matters as much as which color you choose.

What a secure install looks like

Good support starts below the stone. Before we set anything, we check that base cabinets are square, level and screwed into wall studs, not just to each other. Where a run ends at an open side, such as a peninsula, we confirm it is anchored to the floor. Islands with seating overhangs get concealed steel brackets or corbels sized for the depth of the overhang. We bond the top to the cabinets with an appropriate adhesive and avoid perching heavy full-height backsplash slabs on adhesive alone. No method makes a top quake-proof, but they are the difference between a top that stays put and one that is just resting there.

Village homes, varied kitchens

Sierra Madre is small, about 2.95 square miles, and calls itself the Village of the Foothills. Its Lower and Upper Sierra Madre Canyons are known for small bungalows and cabins, and the rest of town mixes older cottages with newer houses. That variety shows up in the kitchens we see: some with original small counters that are ready for a full replacement, some with newer cabinets that only need fresh stone. During the estimate we tell you whether your cabinets can carry a stone top as they are or need reinforcement first.

What we offer in Sierra Madre

  • Quartz countertops, the most common choice for a practical, low-care kitchen
  • Granite countertops in polished, honed and leathered finishes
  • Kitchen countertop replacement that removes tile or laminate and installs stone on sound cabinets
  • Bathroom vanity tops for compact village baths
  • Quartzite and marble countertops for an island or primary bath
  • Outdoor kitchen countertops for backyard patios

Rain, mountains and a city water system

Sierra Madre averages about 24 inches of precipitation a year, most of it from November through March, and Santa Ana winds can bring daytime temperatures into the 80s even outside summer. The city has owned its own water system since 1914, when it took over the rights and distribution systems of the Baldwin Estate and the Sierra Madre Water Company. For outdoor counters exposed to winter rain and fall heat, we favor granite and dense natural stone over standard quartz.

Engineered stone dust

California adopted emergency silica rules for engineered stone fabrication in December 2023, and Cal/OSHA's amended standard (Title 8, Section 5204) became permanent in February 2025, requiring wet methods for high-exposure cutting. We do our cutting off-site whenever possible, and we keep any small on-site adjustments contained, so your home is not filled with dust.

Sierra Madre Questions

How do you keep a stone countertop secure in an earthquake-prone town like Sierra Madre?

We make sure cabinets are level and fastened into the wall framing, support overhangs with brackets or corbels, and bond the top to the cabinets. No method makes a counter earthquake-proof, but a well-supported top is far less likely to shift.

Can my older cabinets handle a stone top?

Many can. We check for loose joints, water damage and sagging during the estimate. If a cabinet needs reinforcement, we tell you before you order stone.

Is Sierra Madre too far from Pasadena for you?

No. Sierra Madre is a short drive east of Pasadena along the foothills, and we schedule estimates and installs there regularly.

Which stone works for a backyard bar in Sierra Madre?

Granite is our usual pick for outdoor counters because it handles sun, heat and winter rain well. Most standard quartz is meant for indoor use.
